With a brushless motor on board, mechanical friction is reduced, which results in a smooth and quiet operation of this laser scanner. The device's core runs in a clockwise direction, allowing it to perform a 360-degree laser range scan of its environment and generate an outline map of the surroundings.

Thanks to its high rotation speed, it can take up to 8000 samples of laser ranging per second, making it one of the fastest and most accurate LIDAR scanners on the market. With a range of up to 12 meters (18 meters with firmware adjustments), the RPLIDAR A2 can perform 2D 360-degree scans and generate highly detailed point cloud data which can be used in a wide array of applications,including mapping, localization, and object/environment modeling.
